That’s the question. And there’s definitely more than one correct answer.
In traditional business, scale is serious … well, business. Hiring lots of people, purchasing expensive equipment, acquiring real estate — often in multiple locations.
With a 7-Figure Small business, you initially scale by growing your audience. And your products replicate with digital magic.
For example, if you’re selling products ranging from online courses to software, you can go to six figures pretty much alone. Add in some outsourced vendors and independent contractors for support, and you’re into the 7 figures.
It’s pretty obvious why. The marginal costs of selling to more people is tiny compared to the gain in revenue as your audience grows.
Going beyond this point to 8 figures and beyond is a different story. Believe it or not, if you’re able to make it to $20 million a year you’ll have an easier time of it then when you’re at $10 million.
Of course, you could just choose not to. And while I made a different decision with Copyblogger/Rainmaker in the past, I don’t think I’d do it again. 7-figure small is pretty sweet.
As we say around here, it’s up to you. If you start your business audience-first, you won’t be boxed in and prevented from scaling, and that’s the important point.
This week’s episode features Ryan Deiss of Digital Marketer and his new business, Scalable. Even though Ryan’s focus is on helping entrepreneurs scale up to 8 figures and beyond, he’s quite frank about the struggle that comes with the transition, and the reasons why you might choose not to scale.
Oh, this is also the first episode of a new, fun format for the show. And it was also recorded live in front of a small audience of people from the Unemployable Initiative.
That means you can choose to watch the video or just listen as usual. Good times!
