Back in 2010, we started the first Copyblogger podcast — Internet Marketing for Smart People.
It was a blast to do, and our audience loved it. Thing is, the audience for the podcast was tiny compared to the broader audience on the blog. Thinking it wasn’t working, we shelved it.
That was a mistake. Just imagine if we would have kept going.
I learned my lesson though. Audio content is different, and the people who listen are usually a more engaged and valuable segment of the broader audience for text.
So, in 2014, I used a limited audio series to launch our Rainmaker Platform SaaS product. Is was a complete home run that propelled us from seven to eight figures in revenue.
And now I have a new business with Unemployable, thanks to a podcast as the primary audience platform.
Yes, email is still essential, but a podcast audience that is much smaller than the Copyblogger audience still told me what they wanted more of, and what products to create — which quickly took Unemployable from side project, to start up, to profitable business.
This week’s guest on 7-Figure Small has some thoughts on how you can avoid my initial mistake, and get started right with a podcast. In fact, Jay Acunzo has lots of thoughts, and they are incredibly insightful.
If you’re trying to grow your business with a podcast, or you’re contemplating it, this episode is a must listen.
From his early work at companies like Google and ESPN, and spanning 15+ years of public performance and creative projects, Jay has inspired and pushed others to question the status quo, find and share their voices, and make a difference with the work they create.
He’s now building his own solo business helping people find their voice and build an audience — all in a way that leads to real revenue, not just downloads on just another podcast.

P.S. Even with a podcast audience, you need powerful email marketing software to convert listeners into customers and clients. That’s why we both use and partner with ConvertKit — it’s the perfect solution for solo business owners.
