Freelancing is exploding.
Even before the economic disruption caused by COVID-19, more and more people chose to lead the unemployable life. Fifty-seven million people worked as freelancers in 2019.
According to the Freelancers Union, freelancers aren’t just shaping the future of work, they are the backbone of the economy. More than one in three Americans freelanced last year, and in five years, the independent workforce grew by 7%.
And yet, so often freelancing is an initial step that leads to bigger and better things. Just about every entrepreneur I know started out doing some sort of client services before moving on to products.
Oh, hi.
Brian Clark here … and you guessed it, the 7-Figure Small podcast and the Unemployable newsletter are back. Happy 2021!
In 1998, I started my first business. It involved publishing pop culture email newsletters, and it’s the only business I’ve started that failed. But it ended up teaching me plenty, and I took the experience and continued launching new ventures.
The first business that succeeded could be thought of as my “freelance stage. I started a solo law practice to bring in income so I could continue with the first business. The interesting thing about the practice was it was powered by an email newsletter that promoted my legal services.
This is now known as content marketing. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Which brings us to a brand new episode of 7-Figure Small.
Like a lot of young people, Krista Stryker thought she knew what she wanted to do after school, and like a lot of people life presented other plans. She ended up as a freelance copywriter, while starting a blog to talk about her passion for fitness on the side.
Going freelance evolved into 12-Minute Athlete, which is now an app, book, and website dedicated to high intensity interval training and body-weight exercises. I think you’ll get a lot out of hearing Krysta’s progression, and how she struggled with the challenges of 2020 just like everyone else.
From Freelance to Fitness Entrepreneur
Next week, we’ll come at it from another angle. You’ll hear from Katie Wells, founder of Wellness Mama. She skipped the freelance stage, created content that built an audience, and now has a legit wellness empire that continues to expand.
See you next week!
Keep going –
