Things have changed in the last 15 years since I started Copyblogger. Major understatement.
Technology has marched forward. One development in particular — the introduction of the iPhone in 2007 — has been the catalyst for significant change, and yet we take it all for granted.
Because of smart phones, social media went mainstream, the app economy emerged, and suddenly the internet provided real-world services thanks to companies such as Uber and Airbnb. And it’s still the source for the research, news, and digital media content we crave.
I don’t have to mention there have been some major problems because of this. But I suppose it was to be expected when your average human is given this much communications reach.
We’ll see much more transformational change, at a faster pace, in the next several years. AI, autonomous vehicles, augmented reality, 3D printing, 5G, the internet of things, and more … they’ll all change the context of how we build audiences that build digital businesses.
Jeff Bezos once offered some poignant advice in the face of this kind of rapid change — focus on what won’t change. And what won’t change are the fundamental aspects of how humans behave, and what they desire.
That’s why, when it comes down to it, a lot hasn’t changed. Or maybe it’s that certain tried and true approaches are becoming fashionable again, because they simply work.
With podcasting going strong, newsletters having a major moment, and blogging still right there in the thick of it all, it sure feels like the internet is returning to its roots in a good way.
So what better way to discuss this trend than with my old friends Chris Brogan and Darren Rowse. The three of us have been referred to as the “OGs” of blogging, and we take that as a badge of honor.
