The world’s a crazy place right now. And it seems to be getting crazier.
Your business may be hurting and it’s stressing you out. Or things are okay, but the uncertainty of what’s to come is disrupting your focus.
That all makes perfect sense. So first of all, cut yourself a break. And then bring yourself back to what you can control.
Writing over at Forbes, Stephanie Burns shares a few ideas on how to make the most of adversity. First and foremost, it’s important to realize that although things are exceptionally weird right now, adversity is simply part of the self-employment game:
Adversity is a part of both life and entrepreneurship. How you show up to it is how you show up for your clients and customers.
One key way to show up is to train your focus on delivering value without regard for what you get in return. That may sounds odd, but that’s essentially what modern marketing is all about.
Whether you call it “content marketing” or building an audience-first business, you have to share freely with potential prospects in order to succeed. You don’t worry about whether all of the people who benefit from what you give actually do business with you, because we know that more people will do business with you than if you weren’t generous in the first place.
Burns puts it this way:
By moving your focus off an outcome, you’ll situate yourself in the heart of what your customers are truly looking for, which can only serve your business in the long run. This will also orient you in a generosity mentality, where you are more focused on what you give rather than what you can sell.
Focusing on others is the smart way to build your business at any time. Plus it gets you out of your own head a bit so you can worry less, and win more.
